South Coast Railway

The South Coast railway deals with the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, and small portions of Tamil Nadu with its headquarters based in Vishakhapatnam. All of Telangana, except Kurnool of Hyderabad division and Jaggaiahpet of Secunderabad division, fall in this railway zone.

As of now, the South Coast Railway zone consists of 3 divisions but they are soon to be reorganized. The Waltiar division will split into two, one of which, the Andhra Pradesh division, will be merged with Vijayawada. The other part of the separation, the Srikakulam District, is expected to be merged with the Khurda Division of the East Coast Railway.

In the rush season, this zone operates 500 trains easily transporting both essential commodities as well as passengers. As per the stats, it is all set to collect up to INR 13,000 crores or US$1.8 billion through their amazingly well laid out rail network.

This zone boasts of plenty of workshops. Some of the mechanical workshops are installed in Tirupati, Rayanapadu and Vadlapudi near Visakhapatnam, which is still being made. Other coach maintenance depots are placed in Vishakaptnam, Guntur, Kakinada, and Guntakal among many others.

Besides these, there are training institutes, healthcare facilities, workshops, sheds, depots, and wi-fi stations installed in junctions across the rail network zone.

The diesel loco shed located in Vishakhapatnam can accommodate at 300 diesel locomotives at any given point. In fact, it is the biggest diesel shed in all of the Indian rail network zones. Training institutes here are meant for both Indian and foreign railway staff for learning railway techniques.
