North Eastern Railway

The North Eastern Railway primarily runs within Uttar Pradesh with its headquarters located in Gorakhpur. It comprises of 3 major divisions namely Izzatnagar railway division, Lucknow NER railway division, and Varanasi City railway station Division.

It connects the Northern Railway divisions like Firozpur to the Eastern belt and the Northern Frontier region that is also popularly known as the Seven Sister States. The administrative head of the North Eastern Zone is officially known as the General Manager. 

North Eastern Railway is the link connecting multiple important and popular cities and tourist centers namely Varanasi, Sarnath, Lucknow, Allahabad, Kushinagar, Lumbani, Ghazipur City, Mau, Ballia, Suraimanpur Deoria, Siddhart Nagar, Basti, Mathura, Vrindavan, Maunath Bhanjan, Azamgarh, Jaunpur, Faizabad, Nainital, Ranikhet, Kausani and Dudhwa and Maharajganj, Nautanwa and Sonauli.

In addition to transporting passengers, the North Eastern Railway is also majorly used for transportation of food grains, security, loaded wagons, coal, cement, petroleum, stone chips, and other such important products in the state. It is also an important channel to allow entry from different zones into Uttar Pradesh.

The North Eastern Railway, which came into existence on 14th April 1952, serves the majority of the state of Uttar Pradesh from the western to the eastern areas. Its main focus is on social transit but also plays a crucial role in transporting commercial goods as well. 

This zone of the Indian Railways is predominantly focused on the transport of the economically weaker sections of society especially the ones residing in the eastern area of Uttar Pradesh right up to West of Bihar.
