Monday’s accident left another 11 people injured. The lorry tried the rail line when it fell in front of the train coming in from Narayangaj around 1pm, Government Railway Police’s DIG Mollik Fakhrul Islam said.

Railway Minister Mazibul Hoque blamed the lorry driver. “Either he lost control or there was negligence on his part,” he said while visiting the spot.

Hoque said a committee had been formed to investigate the accident. Witnesses also faulted the lorry driver.

‘Kashem’, who was on the train’s roof, said the lorry driver did not stop even as the train was entering the container depot. The train rammed into the lorry when it was on the tracks and dragged it about 50 yards, he said.

Several passengers on the train roof and in the car behind the train’s engine were injured. Kamalapur Police Station OC Abdul Majid said two people had died on the spot while others succumbed to their injuries at hospital. More info
