Short distance passengers can expect express travel

NAGPUR: Even as the new train to Amritsar and Pune from Nagpur, which was promised in last year’s Railway budget, is yet to start and several infrastructure projects are stalled due to meagre allocation, passengers and railway officials have high expectations from railway minister Suresh Prabhu, who will present his maiden budget on February 26.

As cabinet ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hansraj Ahir and state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis hail from the region, railway officials from Nagpur division, rail user bodies and passengers are expecting more from this budget.

According to senior railway officials, Nagpur is expected to get a set of main line electric multiple unit (MEMU) or electrical multiple unit (EMU) for intercity journeys.

It will replace short distance passenger trains on roadside stations between Amla, Amravati and Gondia. MEMU is in use in SECR. Gadkari had proposed them in 2012. More info
