NEW DELHI: Railway minister Suresh Prabhu will on Friday inaugurate the new broad gauge line from Lumding to Silchar that will provide better connectivity in the north-eastern region.

Railways has successfully carried out trial runs on this newly-converted broad gauge line that cost around Rs 5,500 crore.

The length of the Lumding-Silchar line is 210 km and it consists of 21 tunnels (with the longest one being 3.23 km long), 79 major bridges and 340 minor bridges, 28 stations and four halt stations.

After completion of the project, railways will now focus on completing phase 2 which includes gauge conversion of Badarpur-Kumarghat (118 km) and ‘finger lines’ Arunachal-Jiribam (50 km), Baraigram-Dullabchera (29 km) and Karimganj-Mahishana including Karimganj bypass (13.50 km) by March 2016.

A railway official said phase 1 and 2 which totals 400 km of gauge conversion were sanctioned in 1996-97. More info
