Protocol soon for rescuing abandoned children in trains and stations

NEW DELHI: With scores of young children found abandoned on railway stations or trafficked through trains the government plans to put in place protocols for their rescue and rehabilitation.

Once in place, train ticket examiners, railway police (GRP) and the station master will be responsible for alerting juvenile protection units at stations on victims of trafficking.

Women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi has met with senior railway officials to impress on the urgency of the matter. The issue has been spearheaded by the WCD ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office.

WCD secretary V S Oberoi has written to railway board chairman seeking a protocol that can be implemented at the earliest. More info
