Namma Metro completes three years

On October 20, it will be three years since Namma Metro began operations.

Over the years, Bangalore’s residents have put up with dug-up roads, road diversions and traffic congestion in an already congested city to enable the construction of Namma Metro, a showpiece project that promised to provide them a faster, cleaner mode of transport and a way out of the city’s chaos.

Three years down the line, Namma Metro is functioning from Byappanahalli to Indiranagar (Reach 1) and from Mantri Square Sampige Station to Rajajinagar Industrial Area (Reach 3, 3A). At present, it is used by up to 45,000 commuters each day.

However, it is still operating with empty seats and Bangaloreans are not using the available links.

Officials at Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said the usage is not as per expectations as Majestic station, where the East-West and North-South lines intersect, is still not ready.

Pradeep Singh Kharola, Managing Director, BMRCL, said, “People should start patronising the network more as we expand.” More info
