Metro rail bill goes to Parliament


Metro Rail Bill-2014 was sent to a parliamentary committee after Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader placed it on Sunday.

The committee has been given four weeks to examine it.

The draft of ‘Metro Rail Act, 2014’ was approved by the Cabinet on Nov 10.

Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Authority (DTCA) will decide the passenger fare by forming a committee and employ inspectors as well, the draft law has proposed.

Insurance has been made mandatory for trains and its passengers, the violation of which may lead to maximum 10 years in prison and fines of up to Tk 100 million.

The same penalty applied to unauthorised transfer of licence. Any obstructions to the metro rail’s administration will lead to two years in prison and maximum Tk 200,000 fine.

The bill set the punishment for obstructing the metro rail’s construction and maintenance to one year in prison and Tk 500,000 as fine. More info
