PATNA: In a bid to provide clean and low-cost drinking water at railway stations, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has been assigned the task of installing water vending machines in all railway zones across the country.

IRCTC intends to install about 4,615 water vending machines in the first phase at 1,200-odd top railway stations. Water will be sold at Re 1 per glass, Rs 3 for half a litre, Rs 5 for one litre and Rs 20 for a can.

IRCTC MD A K Manocha said, “We have already initiated the process to identify interested parties. The product will match the standard prescribed by the World Health Organisation.” The move, when fully implemented, will benefit passengers at about 8,500 railway stations. The 2015-16 railway budget had proposed provision of clean drinking water at low cost by installing such machines. More info
