IRCTC Keen to Take Over Catering

BENGALURU: At a high-level meeting between top Railway officials in New Delhi 10 days ago, it was considered that the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) be allowed to take over all catering activities in the Railways.

Speaking to Express after the launch of passenger amenities at City Station on Saturday, Dr A K Manocha, chairman and managing director of IRCTC, said the corporation currently handles only three per cent of catering inside trains and stations; the Railways handles the rest.

“As a pilot project, IRCTC began catering for the entire Delhi-Amritsar and Delhi-Jammu sections in September 2014. We are operating in 120 trains at present,” he said. The corporation is readying to extend its services to 220 more trains shortly and long-term plans include extending it to 1,200 trains across the country, including Duronto and Rajdhani.

On the e-catering initiatives launched recently, the CMD said Pizza Hut and KFC were contracted last week to deliver food to passengers’ seats. Dominos was the only pizza outlet that had permission earlier. “We are expecting Bikano, Subway and Haldirams to approach us for e-catering services,” he added. More info
