Increase in Freight Traffic, Says Railways

NEW DELHI: The Indian railways have reported an increase of over four per cent in freight traffic during the last six months, from April to September, compared to the same period in 2013.

The Railways carried 532.44 million tonnes of revenue-earning freight traffic from April one – September 30.  The Railway Ministry has said that the freight which is carried showed an increase of 21.44 million tonnes over the 511 million tonnes freight traffic  carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.20 percent.

However, the Ministry said there was no specific reason behind the increase and 4-5 per cent increase is reported annually.

During September, the revenue-earning freight traffic carried by the Railways was 86.71 million tonnes. There is an increase of 1.85 million tonnes, over the actual freight traffic of 84.86 million tonnes carried by the Railways during the same period last year, showing an increase of around 2.18 per cent.
