Holiday hurdle: Speed restrictions may delay trains on Mumbai-Goa route

By Rajendra B Aklekar, Mumbai Mirror

This holiday season, the Mumbai-Goa train timetable might face serious delays, as a speed restriction of 75kmph has been imposed at several stretches along the 760-km Konkan Railway (KR) route.

The restrictions were put in place nearly three weeks ago following the derailment of two goods trains. After the mishaps, commissioner of railway safety (central circle), Chetan Bakshi found flaws in the track welding. The rail line also failed the Ultrasonic Flaw Detection tests. He then asked the KR to conduct the tests again and fix the weak welds, so that trains could be run safely.

Sources said due to the restriction, KR’s prime train, the Konkan Kanya Express, has been delayed by an average of one hour in the last few weeks. The problem might be compounded when more holiday-special trains run along the corridor. The Mumbai-Goa journey, which generally takes 11 hours 40 minutes, has already been delayed by average of an hour right now. More info
