TRICHY: Opposing privatisation and foreign direct investment (FDI) in the railways, hundreds of railway employees took to the roads and blocked the Trichy junction protesting against the central government.

The employees, wearing black shirts and tags, shouted slogans against the railway ministry.

The employees wanted the railways to drop the plan of privatization and bring in FDI as recommended by the Debroy committee. Ever since the committee submitted its report, railway employees have been protesting against the move. On Tuesday, all the Southern Railways Employees Union members came against the central decision wearing black shirts and tags condemning the move.

N Palanivelu, president of the SRMU here, said ever since the committee had submitted the report all the employees across the country have been voicing against it. All the employees have been wearing badges and carrying out their respective works. He added that vacancies in the railways have been increasing and the department is just not taking any actions in filling them but is initiating steps in bringing in FDI. More info
