HOWRAH: The construction work of East-West Metro restarted with a yagna at Bangabashi crossing on Howrah end on Friday after an 18-month impasse over route alignment between the Centre and the state.

The impasse ended last month with Calcutta High Court rejecting the state government’s plea to realign the proposed Metro route. The court had observed that no work would get done unless people were willing to be inconvenienced. The court had held that the state government had not sought any route realignment when it had a stake in the project and it had only raked up the inconvenience factor when it gave up its stake.

The yagna was performed to mark commencement of the underground phase of the project. Officials of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation and Afcons Transtomme Lsproy, the joint venture company executing the project, attended the event. Among others, project manager P P Boni, senior manager A K Dubey and KMRC chief engineer Biswanath Dewanji were present. More info
