Delhi Metro to build platform doors from January

NEW DELHI: With an increase in the number of suicide attempts on the Metro network, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is finally ready to start work on its ambitious plan to install platform screen doors at six underground stations.

The tender has already been awarded to a Korean company and work is set to begin from January 2015. However, with a narrow window of three hours per day to carry out installation work — during non-operational hours — Metro officials admit the project will be completed at a snail’s pace.

“The Korean firm which has been selected is working with DMRC’s technical team to determine design and logistics. The installation, which will be done in phases, will start from January next year,” said a senior DMRC official. The platform screen doors will be 1.7m high and one side of the platform will have 64 display panels (LCD screens), besides screen doors for advertisements. The official added that the platform screen doors should be operational from the later half of 2015. More info
