DDLJ effect: Train rides a hit among Indians on Swiss tours

Bengaluru: In the 90s, Bollywood classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) opened a revenue stream for tour operator RailEurope. Twenty years on, the company is raking in big moolah from Indian tourists taking train trips in Switzerland and other European countries.

Interestingly, 40% of RailEurope’s revenue comes from Indians travelling to and in Switzerland. Of the 235 million Euros earned by the company in 2014, 15.5 million came from Indian tourists.

Bengalureans form a chunk of Europe-bound Indians. “Hopping on to the train is the first choice for Indians, primarily because they are familiar with the mode of transport. Also, while driving, one has to shell out huge amounts of toll at various junctions,” said Kunal Kothari, executive director of RailEurope India Private Limited.

He was speaking on the sidelines of Outbound Travel Roadshow (OTR), a five-city multi-destination road show aimed at improving travel trade. Representatives from various countries and leading names in the travel sector congregated for the event on Thursday. More info
