The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), in collaboration with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), launched the ‘Metro Mitra’ or ‘Friends of the Metro’ programme on Tuesday.

This is to encourage greater cooperation and participation of commuters in ensuring safety and security on the Metro lines.

As part of the programme, commuters will be provided with important telephone numbers and encouraged to call the Metro or CISF authorities if they notice anything untoward, DMRC executive director Anuj Dayal said. Periodic training and sensitisation programmes will also be organised for commuters.

Stating that the daily footfall has increased from 10 lakh in 2009 to 26 lakh currently, Dayal said commuters will be encouraged to act as the Delhi Metro’s ‘eyes and ears’. “Community participation can go a long a way in improving the overall quality of services. A suspicious object or person, a car left unattended in a parking lot for days or anything unusual in the system can be reported,” he said. More info
