KOCHI: Rail passengers will now be able to savour homely meals and snacks served hot by Cafe Kudumbasree, a venture of the women’s self-help group (SHG). This is the first time in the country that a women’s SHG is entering railway e-catering segment, a bastion of big corporates.

The tasty Kudumbasree delicacies can be booked online along with tickets booked as part of the e-catering project of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC), an official press note informed. The dishes of Cafe Kudumbasree, the catering brand of the Kudumbasree Mission, can be booked up to two hours prior to the journey.

In the first phase, the food will be available at Ernakulam South Railway Station and will soon be extended to North Station here. From noon meal, initially, the variety of food served would include breakfast, supper and local snacks soon.

The plan is to bring all stations in the state under the catering service of Cafe Kudumbasree in the second phase and to provide tasty and quality food to passengers at an affordable cost. Panchayats and Social Welfare Minister Dr M K Muneer will inaugurate the IRCTC-Cafe Kudumbasree E-catering project at Ernakulam South Railway Station on Saturday at 10 am.
